Bone Density

Bone Densitometry measures the bone mineral density (BMD) of the spine and the hip, two areas of the body that maybe at risk for fracture. The DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptionmetry) is a reliable method of testing for BMD to determine early stages of bone loss associated with osteoporosis, a disease in which bone density decreases, making bones brittle and prone to fractures.

The National Osteoporosis Foundation estimates that 55% of people age 50 and older in the U.S. have osteoporosis or low bone mass and over 45 million people are affected by the condition. Since osteoporosis is treatable and preventable, early diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and the use of bone density testing to check and monitor response to therapy have greatly improved the prognosis for patients. For more information on osteoporosis go to www.nof.org.
