Ultrasound is a simple, safe, painless diagnostic procedure that utilizes high-frequency sound waves to visualize parts of the body and capture "echoes" as images. Ultrasound is useful in examining abdominal and pelvic function, breast abnormalities, male reproductive systems, kidney and thyroid systems and vascular function. When enhanced with a Doppler technique ultrasound can capture moving blood images of large blood vessels to help determine if clots are present.
