Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are enlarged, “incompetent” veins that are typically found in the legs and feet. These veins no longer work properly, and allow blood to flow backwards and pool in the lower extremities. Not only can they be unsightly and embarrassing, but their improper function may lead to symptoms such as aching and heaviness in the legs, or even more severe problems such as bleeding, pigment changes, and ulcers.

Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) is used to treat incompetent veins in an outpatient setting. This treatment involves placing a laser into the large vein known as the Great Saphenous Vein (GSV) or other similar vein and applying heat to the vein in order to close it. This is designed to seal the incompetent veins and force the blood into veins that function better. |
Microphlebectomy, also known as ambulatory phlebectomy, is a minimally invasive procedure also performed in an outpatient setting which allows excision of almost all of the large and medium size varicose veins. These treatments may be used individually or in conjunction with each other, depending on each specific patient’s needs.
For more information on preparing for EVLT and Phlebectomy:
- A representative will call you prior to your procedure to review instructions and complete registration.
- Make sure to let your doctor know if you are taking any blood thinners, including Aspirin, Coumadin (Warfarin), Heparin, Lovenox, Plavix or over-the counter medications. You may be asked to stop taking this medication prior to your procedure. Your doctor will discuss this with you during consultation.
PRE-OP:
- You will want to shower the morning of your procedure, as you must wear your compression hose for 24 hours after the procedure.
- You will want to bring loose fitting shorts to wear during the procedure, as well as your Class II compression hose.
INTRA-OP:
- This is a sterile procedure using ultrasound guidance to image the veins.
- You will be awake during the procedure, however a medication such as Xanax or Valium may be prescribed prior the procedure in order to help with patient comfort.
- The procedure is performed with local anesthetic and typically takes approximately 45 min – 2 hours.
POST-OP:
- Patients are up and walking immediately after the procedure.
- You will be instructed to wear your compression hose for the next 5-7 day.
- If you develop fever or severe pain contact our office at 352.333.7(VIP) or call your referring physician. After hours or on week-ends, go to the nearest emergency room or call North Florida Regional Medical Center at 352.333.4000 and ask for the Radiologist on Call.
- You will be scheduled for an appointment 3-7 days after the surgery for a check up, and to assess the need for additional treatment.
Spider Veins
Spider veins and reticular veins (also known as telangectasias) are clusters of small red, purple, or blue veins that appear on the thigh, calves, or ankles. These may be unsightly and embarrassing for the patient.
Sclerotherapy of spider veins involves injection of medicine (sclerosant) into the vein that irritates its lining and subsequently seals it shut. This procedure is done by injecting the sclerosant through a very tiny needle using ultrasound guidance as needed. This procedure is performed as an outpatient in the comfort of an office setting, and may require several successive treatments for optimal cosmetic result. Typically, this procedure is done every 2 weeks or so. Once the veins have been treated, you may require maintenance treatments every 6-12 months.
For more information on preparing for sclerotherapy:
